It could've been much worse!

A little while ago Katelyn was working on a craft at the kitchen counter and was having so much fun using her somewhat new scissor skills. As she was cutting her finished artwork into hundreds of tiny pieces, I recall thinking how lucky we've been to have 5 and 3 year old girls who've never cut their own hair. I worried that by even thinking it, I was going to jinx myself. Well, I did. A few days later, while I was upstairs feeding Bailey, Alyssa came running up the stairs in a panic holding a lock of Katelyn's hair in her hand. She screamed, "Mom, Katelyn is downstairs cutting all her hair!" As I was running down the stairs I was envisioning the worst. We ran to the room that she'd been in, but, she was nowhere to be found. Now, we are running from room to room in search of a very mischievous girl who is hiding with a pair of scissors. I knew that once we found her the damage would be bad. When we finally found her under Alyssa's bed, I was so relieved to see that there were only a couple more chunks of hair missing. It could have been so much worse! At least the part she cut is still long enough to fit into piggy tails, so I guess that's how she'll be wearing her hair for a long time! I didn't quite know how we wanted to discipline for this behavior, so I was waiting to talk to Mark to see what he thought we should do. 30 minutes later Alyssa and Katelyn are in a fight. They come to me to tattle on each other and then our conversation goes as follows:

Alyssa: "Mom, what do you think should be Katelyn's consequence for cutting her hair?"

Me: "Her consequence is that her hair doesn't look pretty anymore. And, Katelyn, if this ever happens again, we will have to take your very favorite toy and throw it in the garbage."

Katelyn: (very seriously) "Well..... I really like my dolls, and I also like my elephant.......but, Alyssa is my very favorite thing."

This is classic Katelyn! She was not even trying to crack a joke. After the way she and Alyssa had been fighting I think she was really hoping she could pull this one off!

Oh Mindy - I can't stop laughing. That is seriously one of the funniest things I have ever heard. I'm glad the hair thing was somewhat minor. That is still one of my biggest fears. YIKES!

I am awaiting the day my little Lulu does the same thing. Katelyn's face is priceless.
